FAQ's

Q: What benefits would I receive?
A: Participants receive a stipend of $1,914 per month, paid biweekly, along with an Education Award or Cash Award depending on length of service. In addition, full-time positions include eligibility for mileage reimbursement and rental assistance.

Q: What does a typical day look like?
A: This varies by site. One of the strengths of AmeriCorps is its flexibility in meeting the needs of each community and nonprofit partner. Full-time roles may include activities such as volunteer recruitment or grant writing. Summer positions tend to be more hands-on and focused on direct service. In all roles, you can expect meaningful, community-centered work that builds skills and connects you with valuable resources and people.

Q: How do I apply?
A: Applications are completed through My.AmeriCorps.gov. You will need to create an account, complete the required profile information, and then search for “Service Listings.” From there, select “Utah” under the state filter to browse available opportunities in your area.

Q: What is the Education Award?

A: The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award provides up to $7,395 (prorated for service terms shorter than 52 weeks) for eligible educational expenses. Funds are held in an account and may be used for up to seven years toward qualified technical or academic programs. Loan deferment may also be available.

Q: What does my schedule look like?

A: A minimum of 37 hours per week is required. Some sites may offer flexible scheduling or remote work options, but these vary by placement. Final scheduling decisions are made by each site supervisor and should be discussed during the interview process.

Q: What are the requirements to apply?
A: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or a lawful permanent resident and at least 18 years old. Some sites may have additional requirements such as a valid driver’s license or access to a vehicle. Requirements vary by position, so it is important to review each listing carefully.

Q: What is PSP? Is it part of AmeriCorps? Is it a VISTA program?
A: The Public and School Partnership (PSP) is a host organization for AmeriCorps VISTA members across Utah. Founded in 2003, PSP has focused on education and poverty-related initiatives and has since expanded its service areas. AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a national, year-long service program designed to build capacity for nonprofit organizations. AmeriCorps is the broader federal service network that includes multiple programs such as VISTA, Seniors, and Summer Associates, including PSP’s own summer program.

Q: I'm feeling a little uncertain about the future of the program. Is everything expected to continue as planned?
A: AmeriCorps has continued to serve communities through many challenges and remains supported by a strong network of partners and advocates. While no program can guarantee outcomes, participants are supported by experienced staff and a community committed to service and stability.

Q: How does my service make an impact?
A: Your service makes an impact by helping meet important community needs and supporting the individuals and organizations you serve. Every contribution, whether large or small, helps strengthen programs, expand resources, and create positive change within the community.

Q: I’m interested in becoming a potential site. What are the next steps?
A: Please contact us via the “Contact Us” page to connect with the Program Director. If you are a nonprofit, non-religious community service organization in Utah, we would be happy to explore potential partnership opportunities.
