We would like to congratulate the awardees of the Spirit of Service Award and the Mentoring Award in 2024.

Spirit of Service Award

These are people who show up and do what needs to be done, who go the extra mile without being asked, who are tireless workers, but whose efforts largely go unrecognized.  These people are self-starters, provide quality services/supports to stakeholders and clients, and are always looking for ways to make a difference. These are the people who make an impact, but maybe aren't as visible as they should be.

Technical Assistance Division

TA Division wishes to recognize Brinley Jones for this award. Brinley joined TAESE in the TA Division in July 2021 as a Staff Assistant. When the TAESE Program Coordinator position opened, Brinley was hired resolutely and has served in that role for the past two years. She had big shoes to fill at the time, but looking back over these past years, it has become clear that, rather than fill someone else’s shoes, Brinley has created a whole new wardrobe with her own style of professionalism, positivity, and diligent service to the entire TAESE team. Brinley is always there, consistently asking, “Is there anything I can do to help you?” However, that question is typically difficult to answer because the help that might have been needed was preemptively and proactively provided. Brinley is always thinking of others and works tirelessly to support, advise, guide, and mentor others. We appreciate Brinley’s positive personality and everything about who she is and all she does for the TAESE team!

Services Division

The Services Division wishes to recognize Janel Dugmore for this award. Janeal has been with the IDRPP for 8 years and has had many roles during that time. She has worked in the Southeast Early Intervention program, as well as in the Service Division leadership. She is currently the “finance guru” for the Division and is critical to many of the programs in managing their financial affairs. She handles all things financial and in the past year has been instrumental in the writing of several grants. Janeal also is a great team player. She often adjusts her schedule to meet the needs of others in the Division. She consistently goes above and beyond her designated role to make sure that things are running smoothly. She is truly indispensable as a member of the Service Division.

Administration Division

The Administration Division wishes to recognize Ryan Kwak, IDRPP’s Personnel Coordinator. Ryan is a huge asset to the Business Office and the IDRPP. In addition to being an expert on personnel matters, he is very reliable and quick to find solutions to problems as they arise. For example, not long ago, Ryan proactively investigated the many recurring phone charges being charged to our accounts, even though it was not part of his job description. Turns out many of the phone lines were no longer being used and we were able to cancel those lines and reduce our expenses. He now reviews these expenses for accuracy each month. Ryan saw the need and was quick to act and fix the problem. Ryan has taken on several other new tasks, including processing salary reallocations, journal entries, and budget entries. In addition, he has been integral with testing our soon-to-be implemented financial system and he is always asking good questions that make us look at our processes and find ways to improve. On top of everything, Ryan is a very thoughtful and positive person.

Research & Training Division

The R&T division wishes to recognize Tricia Jones-Parkin for this award. She is the principal investigator and trainer of Customized Employment Training and Technical Assistance at the Center for Employment and Inclusion at Utah State University. Her passionate advocacy for meaningful employment opportunities challenges stereotypes and demonstrates that everyone has the potential to contribute and thrive in the workplace and their communities. Tricia’s commitment is reflected in her proactive efforts to drive lasting improvements in direct employment services. She currently delivers customized employment training and technical assistance to employment specialists and other professionals across Utah and beyond. Through her work, she not only enhances their skills but also expands their capacity to make a meaningful impact. Tricia exemplifies the spirit of service through her steadfast dedication to improving supports, services, and outcomes for individuals with significant disabilities.

Mentoring Award

The recipient of this award is Brad Rieben. Brad is the Business Manager for the Institute for Disability Research, Policy & Practice (IDRPP). His colleagues comment on why Brad was chosen for this award.

One co-worker wrote: “Brad has provided training and mentoring opportunities to the R&T division staff and has spent many hours supporting staff (including me!!) with budget questions and navigating ARGOS. He is always willing to meet to discuss issues and questions and never tires of explaining the same thing two (oftentimes three) times to make sure we really understand. As a new PI, I am continuously worried that I have budgeted items incorrectly or am reading reports wrong; Brad is always willing to check in and make sure I am on track with my budget or explain necessary revisions. Brad is an invaluable resource and we wouldn't be able to do our work without him!”.

The TA Division stated- “Brad’s mentorship and support cannot be overstated. He has been an invaluable asset to the TA Division, particularly for TAESE projects. His guidance and support have been essential for our PIs and business support staff. The intricate nature of TAESE projects poses significant challenges for our accounting and business team, but Brad consistently provides timely and insightful solutions. His willingness to assist with complex accounting issues, such as creating a new time and effort recording process, has streamlined our operations and improved budget tracking. This new system empowers PIs with accurate, real-time data, enabling them to make informed decisions and effectively manage their projects. Brad is the best!.”

Another co-worker writes: “I completely agree and have asked him the same questions about ARGOS, he is always cheery and patient, I have greatly appreciated his help in understanding ARGOS, additionally he has been invaluable with all the DHHS MEICHV Contract changes, and he does it all with a smile. Thank You."
