About the Training

This session, based on chapters 5 and 6 of the Unpacking the Pyramid Model book, helps Pyramid Model implementers create an environment that promotes children’s engagement, participation and independence.

First, chapter 5 examines strategies that support the design of the physical environment including the physical layout of the classroom and learning centers, toys and materials, aesthetics, and accessibility to promote the participation of all children.

Second, chapter 6 breaks down the classroom day and examines the Events, Activities and Routines of the day to ensure balance, establish clear routines within routines within routines and support children’s self-monitoring of their own engagement and participation.

Finally, this session briefly introduces the materials in the Pyramid Model Classroom Companion kit and describes how they can be used to further support the development of a positive classroom environment.

Learning objectives:

  • Help participants construct a positive classroom environment that supports access and engagement for ALL students.
  • Help classroom teams develop predictable schedules and routines that maximize participation and learning.
  • Introduce ways the Pyramid Classroom Kit can be used to support children’s independence around classroom expectations.

Presenter - Ronald Roybal

Ronald Roybal is a research associate at the University of Denver in Denver Colorado. He has worked over 25 years in early childhood as a teacher for 8 years and the last 18 as a trainer and coach. As a teacher, Ron was trained and worked in a Learning Experience Alternative Program for Preschool and Parents (LEAP) classroom. After leaving the classroom to join the center for Positive Early Learning Experience (PELE) at the University of Colorado Denver, Ron has spent the last 18 years coaching and training classroom teams in inclusive practices for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other disabilities alongside typical developing peer using peer mediated strategies. Ron also provides training and technical support to school districts, head start programs, and childcare programs around the country to reduce the likelihood of challenging behaviors within educational settings. His mission is to bring high quality inclusion for all students using evidence-based practices.
