Online Self-Guided ACT for Dementia Caregivers
We are recruiting for a research study at USU that will test an online, self-guided mental health and wellbeing program called ACT Guide for Family Caregivers of Individuals with Dementia. If choose to participate, we will ask you to complete a brief screening survey and phone call. If eligible, you will then complete the baseline survey. After baseline, you will then be randomly assigned to either the treatment condition in which you will begin ACT Guide program immediately, or to a waitlist condition where you will wait 12 weeks to begin the ACT Guide. If you are in the treatment condition you will complete 2 surveys about your mental health over 12 weeks. If you’re in the waitlist condition, you will complete 2 surveys and then be offered the ACT guide program at 12 weeks postbaseline. For those in the waitlist group, you will then complete a fourth and final survey at 18 weeks post baseline.
If you choose to participate, you will earn $20 for the first global assessment, $30 for the second, $40 for the third (and, for the waitlist-only, $50 for the 4th). Thus, a person in the treatment group who completes all assessments receives $90, and in the waitlist control group receives $140.
Each survey will take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. The ACT Guide program will take approximately 30-40 minutes per session to complete. Thus, it will take approximately 6 hours over 12-weeks to complete all study activities if you’re in the treatment group and approximately 7 hours over 18 weeks if you’re in the waitlist group.
In order to be eligible you must:
- Be ≥ 18 year old family caregiver of an individual with dementia or significant memory loss that impacts their everyday life;
- Self-report distress in your role as a family caregiver
- Be interested in taking an online, self-guided intervention;
- Be able to read/write in English;
- Be able to access the internet via computer, mobile phone, or tablet; and
- Have a phone number from a landline or cellular carrier.
