Transition Conference: Best Practices For Those Who Serve Youth With Disabilities

Guiding young adults with disabilities into the adult world can be challenging. The Transition Post-Systems Conference is here to help. Utah educators, vocational rehabilitation counselors, community supported employment providers, school counselors and families can come and find best practices in their mission to support youth with disabilities.

The conference takes place June 19, 2019 at the Utah Valley Convention Center in Provo, Utah. It is hosted by the Utah State Board of Education, Utah State University’s Utah Transition Action Team, and the Utah Professional Development Network at the Center for Persons with Disabilities. Registration is $25.

Keynote speaker Margo Izzy will speak on how to teach self-determination.She co-authored Empowering Students with Hidden Disabilities: A Path to Pride and Success with LeDerick Horne. She is currently the program director of Transition Services at the Nisonger Center, a University Center of Excellence on Disabilities at the Ohio State University. With over 36 years in the special education field, Margo has extensive experience with the transition from high school to college and careers.

“If you’re a teacher or a VR counselor, you’re going to come away with the most up to date best practices, some tools and a broader perspective on what’s available to help you do your job better,” said Jeff Sheen, associate director of research and training at the CPD. Parents could also gain valuable information. “The conversation about self-determination is important for families to hear.”

Breakout sessions will cover topics including college and career readiness, evidence-based practices, collaboration across disciplines and agencies, supporting employment for students with severe disabilities, guardianship, reducing the dropout rate, transition in rural areas, independent living centers and more.
